About this place
Enveloped in aromatic smoke drifting from the tabletop gas grills, exploring the varying textures of offal cut by cut captures the essence of dining here. Situated in Nishishichijo, Shimogyo Ward, Akayashiro delivers an unpretentious evening yakiniku experience anchored by a commitment to fresh variety.
Plates arriving at the table feature classic cuts alongside less common delicacies: rich horumon, crunchy mino (first stomach), aka-senmai (abomasum), senmai (omasum), and cartilaginous urute. Cuts favored by connoisseurs, such as hoso (small intestine) grilled slowly skin-side down, crisp tan-suji (tongue sinew), and agi (beef cheek), also feature prominently. Their rich sweetness is complemented by a refreshing, lightly acidic dipping sauce or lemon salt. In between grilled courses, sashimi-style offerings like tongue sashimi or fresh raw senmai add a clean, succulent contrast that balances the meal.
Matching the popularity of the meats sizzling on the grill is the signature donabe (clay pot) rice. Fluffy, slowly steamed white rice is an indispensable partner for sauce-glazed offal and agi simmered with sansho pepper. Diners can refresh their palates with draft beer from the keg or makgeolli served in a kettle, and bring things to a satisfying close with a light wakame-and-egg soup or spicy yukgaejang soup.
Exuding a nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere, the interior offers table and tatami seating alongside a counter accommodating solo guests. The lights stay on until 2:00 late at night, making it an inviting stop not only during the lively early evening hours but also for relaxed late-night barbecue and drinks.
